Plant Your Roots in Greece

In an extraordinary session of the executive board --- Association of Prefecture Magnisias "Argonauts" --- and addressing the enormous destruction of nature's vital resource that is represented by trees; sustained by extensive accidental or suspicious fires in our native land, the group's members resolve to immediately set in motion a campaign to reclaim lost green. Specifically, we now begin the collection of monies with the aim to complete the multi-year task of restoring all destroyed trees. Importantly, the effort is in collaboration with, and under the auspices of the "Plant Your Roots in Greece" foundation, established in 1994, whose president is the well-known Theodoros Spyropoulos, US coordinator and Vice President of the Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) . In an exchange of correspondence, the leadership of both units pledge to coordinate joint appeals through the organs of mass communication, including the Internet, and the constituent groups within the broad circle of the Greek American Community, for two-fold reasons: one, to expand the coverage of our piloted program into other areas in Greece similarly ravaged, and, two, increase the voluntary contributions by drawing a larger pool of dedicated people into the project.

The next tree-planting project of the Greek-American Institute, "Plant Your Roots in Greece," will take place at one of the most important archaeological sites of our country, the archaeological park of Dion, Pieria, where excavations continue and new archaeological findings are unearthed daily. Planned tree-plantings will take place in collaboration with the society "Friends of Green of Thessaloniki."  The Institute "Plant Your Roots in Greece" was fraternized with the Society of Thessaloniki last August within the context of the first International Conference of that Society, titled "Reviving the Delphic Idea," which was held in Delphi.

Σε έναν από τους σημαντικότερους αρχαιολογικούς χώρους της πατρίδας μας, στο αρχαιολογικό πάρκο του Δίου Πιερίας  όπου οι ανασκαφές συνεχίζονται και καθημερινά έρχονται στην επιφάνεια καινούργια αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα θα γίνουν οι επόμενες δενδροφυτεύσεις του Ελληνο-Αμερικανικού Οργανισμού “Φύτεψε τις Ρίζες Σου στην Ελλάδα”.

Οι δενδροφυτεύσεις θα γίνουν σε συνεργασία με το Σωματείο “Φίλοι του Πρασίνου Θεσσαλονίκης”. Το Ίδρυμα “Φύτεψε τις Ρίζες Σου στην Ελλάδα” αδελφοποιήθηκε με το Σωματείο της Θεσσαλονίκης τον περασμένο Αύγουστο στο πλαίσιο του πρώτου Παγκοσμίου Συνεδρίου “Αναβιώνοντας τη Δελφική ιδέα”, στους Δελφούς.

The Hellenic American Foundation, Plant Your Roots in Greece, is becoming increasingly popular within the Greek-American community and also in Greece. "Greek-Americans recognize the value of protecting the environment and not forgetting their roots. There are a number of cases which are indeed moving," says the Foundation's President Mr. Th. Spyropoulos. "Many of our tree plantings are carried out to keep alive the remembrance of Greek-Americans and/or in their honour.  Response by philhellene Americans has also been great."
